Great Barrier Island offers a wide variety of accommodation for your holiday or vacation - from luxury lodges, self-contained houses, hideaway cottages, bed and breakfast, hillside cabins to budget backpackers.  Idyllic surroundings with stunning sea or bush views, abundant bird song and a friendly welcome.  Something for all and for every budget.  Seasonal rates apply with most accommodation.  Rates quoted are generally off-peak

Awana takes its name from the large pa on the headland overlooking Awana stream mouth.  This pa was known as 'Te Pa a Wana' or the pa of Wana.  This chief, Te Wana, was a famous ancestor of Ngati Tai who lived in this area until the 17th century.

Harataonga literally means 'to violate the tapu of a sacred object' and the ancient name was brought from the Pacific homeland of 'Hawaiki'.
